Frequently Asked Questions

This list of FAQs should help answer most questions about the Star Stream Pro kits. If you have any questions that are not answered here, please reach out to SSP Support.

Q: Does the Stream Box kit include everything I need to install it into my vehicle?
A:
Yes! The Stream Box kit includes everything needed to install your system. This includes a power lead that is pre-terminated for the Stream Box, and has bare leads on the other end to connect straight to your battery switch *recommended. The kit incudes all the hardware and cables to mount as well as the included paper template for drilling holes to mount your Stream Box. This template is very specific and important.

Q: Can I connect my Stream Box and/or Starlink to my solid state switching unit or PDM?
A: We suggest installing both the Stream Box and Starlink directly to your battery cut off switch. This allows you to use either system while the vehicle is in use, but the ability to turn it off when parked.  The StreamBox has a large button that you can use to power the unit as well. We have found that connecting the Starlink to a power management unit typically results in poor power delivery to the dish as it requires much high amperage draw than the typical switching unit can provide.

Q: How many cameras can I connect to my Stream Box kit?
A: The Stream Box has physical connections for two HDMI inputs and two USB power outputs. This allows you to connect two GoPro cameras at a time. It is possible to connect more cameras if you use an HDMI switcher inside the vehicle, but this would require the occupants of the vehicle to switch the cameras from within the car *We do not recommend this option.

Q: Why is my video stream upside down?
A: Normally, GoPros will auto-right themselves when you mount them upside down and record to a Micro-SD card. When you plug the HDMI cable into the GoPro, it will no longer do this. This is out of our control and requires that you mount the GoPro upside-right. If you're mounting the cameras in a way where they have to be mounted from the top, we have special mounts that will screw onto the top of the GoPro Media Mod and keep the camera up-right. Contact SSP Support for more information on these mounts or visit our GoPro Mounts page.

Q: Why is there GoPro battery and SD Card graphics on my video feed?
A: The GoPro cameras we send with your Stream Box kit have special firmware and configurations to auto-start and auto-stream for the Star Stream system. Sometimes the GoPros can get reset and require a re-flash of the configuration.  This is a very simple scan of a QR code that takes just a couple seconds. Once this flash is done, the cameras will no longer display this information on the stream and it will be "reset" to your Star Stream settings. You can get this information, and the step-by-step instructions, by contacting SSP Support.

Q: Will the special programing and configuration work on any GoPro cameras? ...I have a few laying around.
A: No, we only support the latest GoPros purchased from Star Stream Pro.

Q: How can I keep the cables plugged into the GoPros?
A: The connections on the GoPro Media Mods are pretty small and can come unplugged from vibration during use. We have custom made specific brackets that can screw onto the cameras to firmly hold the cables into place. You can purchase these from us, or by contacting SSP Support. The other option is to use semi-permanent adhesive to connect the cables with a water tight seal. To do this we recommend Sugru.

Q: Do you have longer cables than what comes in the kit? I want to put my camera further away and routing requires more length.
A: Due to the nature of the cables being both HDMI and USB, their industry standard specs have issues delivering the power reliably that far. We recommend mounting the Stream Box unit in the middle of the two camera distances to avoid this issue. If your installation must have longer cables, we do have custom solutions that may fit your needs; please contact SSP Support for more info.

Q: How do I stream to Youtube, Facebook, Instagram or other Social Channels?
A: YouTube has a lot of great tutorials like this one, How to Stream your Race, and we have instructions to help set this up for you here: How to Stream with OBS
